Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.
Here's a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but within Together resides a deep meditation about how we choose to love one another.
A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities
Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.
The plot commences when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.
The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.
Complex Characterizations
A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.
Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.
Tim and Millie confront the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.
Thematic Depth
While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.
Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
